Lacey and Larkin Discuss Joe Arpaio and His Pardon

Susan R. Bolton is a woman who serves as a judge in the United States right now. She works for a district court located in the Southwestern state of Arizona. Bolton’s actions essentially alarmed no one in the fall of 2017. She gave her OK to Joe Arpaio’s pardon by the current President of the United States, Donald J. Trump. Arpaio was Maricopa County’s sheriff before.

He got a July 2017 conviction that was part of the “criminal contempt” classification. This was for dismissing a command from a federal judge. The command was associated with a lawsuit that took place in 2007. It focused on racial profiling. Arpaio got his pardon shortly before his sentencing was to take place. It was a matter of weeks.

Bolton’s choice ends the newest phase of Arpaio’s story. One big part of his story revolves around the contentious arrests of two people who used to own the Phoenix New Times. These people are Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey.

Larkin and Lacey headed the publication as it published many pieces that discussed the sheriff. Arpaio had been the sheriff for approaching a quarter of a century. Lacey made his opinions regarding the whole situation crystal clear. He agreed with Rex Tillerson and concluded that President Trump isn’t wise.

He stated that the President’s Arpaio pardon only functions to confirm that to the world. He added more by indicating that the situation was the ideal union of a pair of people who are unprincipled and dishonest. He listed a number of things that took place while Arpaio was the sheriff. He talked about severe prison settings. He even mentioned something that was called a “tent city.” People compared it to something that was straight out of a grisly war scene.

Larkin is certainly no Arpaio lover. He remarked that he was horrific as far as imprisoning individuals went. He remarked that he was equally horrific in his sheriff position. He did say, though, that Arpaio had political abilities. He even expressed that he thinks that he paved the way for President Trump’s current position.

Lacey thinks that President Trump completed the pardon as a means of getting the approval of the people who appreciate him in the United States.

Larkin and Lacey got a total $3.75 million from Maricopa County for their settlement. They did a lot with this money as well. They employed it to set up a group that’s called the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund. This organization offers grants to groups that focus on the rights of migrants in the region.

It assists groups that are based in all different parts of Arizona. Larkin and Lacey have not left the journalism world permanently in any way.
